Robert Smith, The Cure

Mainstreet, Auckland
July 1980

Robert Smith, The Cure’s leader/singer/guitarist/songwriter has always denied the band were Goths. “I’ve been wearing makeup since I was a kid.” At Queen Street’s now demolished Mainstreet, despite New Zealand being the only country in the world where their second album “Seventeen Seconds” was a hit, crowd numbers were miniscule. The glory days for the band were still to come.
